We have a new small, compact drone from DJI. Yes, a drone that’s smaller than the DJI Mavic. The DJI Spark is a mini-drone that can take off from the palm of your hand and controlled through hand gestures. The Spark is like any other budget drone on the market, but it does have the upper hand. It’s using the same software as other high-end DJI drones. ActiveTrack, one of the advance modes, will lock onto a person or object then follow the person or object around. There is also QuickShot intelligent flight mode which will use a preset flight plan and subject tracking to shoot a video. Very few other drones offer advanced flight modes, let alone one that’s from a prominent drone maker.
At the same time, you can use a traditional controller with the DJI Spark. It’ll also support a smartphone or tablet as a controller, which allows three or four different inputs. With a classic controller, you can activate Sports Mode which raises the top speed to a whopping 31 MPH. DJI Spark also works with DJI’s Googles so you can fly the drone from a first person perspective.
DJI Spark is a cheap drone with advanced features
For the hardware, there is dual-band GPS, GLONASS, a forward-facing 3D sensing system, downward-facing vision system, inertial measurement, and 24 computing cores. The visual assistant offers support up to 98 feet and can detect obstacles up to 16 feet away. If the drone loses connection or the battery gets low you can press the “return home” button and the drone will use GPS to return from where it launched.
The built-in camera is a 12-megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor, that can capture vide0 up to 1080p. There’s a 2-axis mechanical gimbal and DJI’s UltraSmooth stabilization technology. The gimbal can move up down and stop vibrations but won’t turn left or right. There are also advance photo features with horizontal or vertical panoramics and a feature to create artificial depth-of-field photos. You can also use dozens of filters and auto-editing templates.
The DJI Spark will set you back $499, the cheapest DJI drone available. The basic price gets you the drone, USB charger, three pairs of propellers. There is a combo which sets you back $699 but gets you a second battery, four pairs of propellers, a remote controller, propeller guards, a charging hub, and all of the necessary cables. The drone comes in four colors; Alpine White, Sky Blue, Meadow Green, Lava Red, and Sunrise Yellow.
